The South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR) came into existence on
April 14th, 2003. It was created by a group of people in south
central Manitoba who saw the need for cancer related support
services that rural people could access without having to travel a
great distance. SCCR is a registered non-profit charitable
organization administered by an elected Board of Directors whose
members live throughout the area. The office in Morden is staffed by
Resource Coordinators and volunteers. The organization is funded
entirely by the communities that it serves, in the form of grants,
memorials, donations and fundraising initiatives by groups and
individuals. SCCR does not receive financial assistance from
government, or from organizations such as CancerCare Manitoba or the
Canadian Cancer Society, although these organizations provide
assistance to SCCR in areas of resource and education material.
SCCR provides support to cancer patients who live in the service
area (map) of Boundary
Trails Health Center (BTHC), and the RM of Roblin. Services include
a very active transportation program, with drivers from all over the
area who volunteer their time to take people to cancer related
appointments for a small fee. SCCR has a selection of wigs which are
loaned out to patients who are experiencing hair loss and with the
wig, the person receives a complimentary styling and care kit.
Volunteer sewers in the area provide a variety of hats and turbans
which are given to people who have lost their hair due to cancer
treatment. Some bras and breast prostheses are also available for
loan. A service fee will be applied to the loan banks after Jan.1st,
2006. SCCR has an ever expanding Resource Library with information
about various types of cancer and related topics in print, video or
CD-ROM form. A computer with High Speed Internet access is available
for people who wish to do research on cancer subjects or view the
CD-ROM's.
Several group programs are available through SCCR.
Just For Me is a workshop provided by a hair
replacement specialist, a certified mastectomy consultant and a
cosmetician. Topics such as skin care and make-up, wig fitting and
styling and bra and prosthesis fitting are discussed.
SCCR continues to grow and develop new ways of supporting the people
in our area who are living with cancer. Public education, including
prevention, is an ongoing goal of the organization and we are
looking for ways of assisting in this endeavor.
