SOUTH CENTRAL CANCER RESOURCE
Fundraiser
Rock’n
Revival
"Country Rocks"
On
Saturday April 9th at the 3rd annual Rock’n Revival South Central
Cancer Resource raised over $5300. About 176 people attended and
had a great time rockin’ to the Bare Yogis. People in attendance
bought tickets on silent auction prizes as well as a couple raffle
items. Two contestants, Ron Braun and Richard Dymond vied for
everyone’s votes while they sang Conway Twitty and Johnny Cash
songs. The planning committee members were Sandy Thomson, Jay
McKay, Karen Wiebe, Beth Faux and Carla Wallcraft along with some
prize helpers Dale Brown, Ted Klassen, Kim Morrow, Cathy Lone and
Shannon Klassen. Many other people helped out along the way. Board
members donated their time or prizes or both and helped out the
night of the event. Monetary and prize donations were given by many
individuals and businesses in the communities we serve and we would
like to send a huge thank you to them all. We could not have done
it without their support. It was a great example of people working
and playing together to help SCCR help those in need ease the burden
of a cancer diagnosis in South Central Manitoba.
Thanks again to everyone who attended or helped out in some way.

FOCUS GROUP
Cancer Patient, Family and Caregiver Experience with Access to
Cancer Services in Manitoba
The Canadian Cancer Action Network (CCAN); CCAN/Manitoba and the
Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division are interested in hearing
about Manitobans experience in accessing cancer services.
The goal is to hear the experiences, and then develop recommended
changes for improvements to the Provincial and Federal governments.
Experiences will be captured in six Focus Groups, located throughout
Manitoba,. (Winnipeg, The Pas, Dauphin, Brandon, Morden; and
Opaskwayak Cree Nation).
Manitobans that have experienced cancer services in the Province are
invited to indicate their willingness to participate in a focus
group. All experiences are welcome. Interested individuals
(patients, family members or caregivers) are asked to supply their
contact information either to a member of the executive of CCAN
Manitoba, or by emailing
epele@peleresearch.com ; subject CCAN/CCS project. Contact
information should include: name, phone numbers, email address and
mailing address. Volunteer interest must be communicated by Sept 2,
2008.
The
focus group meeting will be scheduled for September, will generally
start at 5:30 in the evening, a light snack will be provided and all
participants will receive an honorarium of $80.00. Individuals
with long distances to drive can request out of pocket gas money. We
expect that a few individuals will require overnight accommodation
and some food allowance and this will be provided on a pre arranged
basis.
Individuals that volunteer their names will be called by Pele
Research, sometime in the first week of September, to confirm their
ability to attend and to be provided with location details.
Access to care is an issue of significant importance to CCAN and CCS
and we appreciate individuals that volunteer their time to make
improvements in this area.

South Central Cancer Resource would like to thank all those
who attended our Sara Williams Horticulture evening on May 1st.
Approximately $2000.00 was raised which will continue to help fund our
transportation program and many other support services
offered by SCCR. The Board of SCCR extends a heartfelt
thank you to Morden Nurseries for sponsoring the event and
donating all of the beautiful perennials and shrubs for our
silent auction, as well as for the lovely centerpieces.
Thank you to Nancy Penner for being the MC of the evening
and to all of those who donated the delicious desserts. And
last but not least we thank Sara Williams for putting on a
great presentation. Sara was in Morden on Chautauqua Spirit
business and will be returning on Sept 27 as part of a 3 day
Chautauqua Celebration. Thank you again!

5th Annual General Meeting report
The 5th
Annual General Meeting of South Central Cancer Resource was held on
January 24, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the in the Multipurpose Room at
Boundary Trails Health Center. Reports were given on SCCR’s
activities and financial position during the fiscal year which ended
Sept.30, 2007. Dr. Margie Hesom addressed the audience about early
recognition and screening for cancer and musical entertainment was
provided by Rick Wiebe. Refreshments were served.
The draw for Kerry’s Quilt was made. Winner of the quilt is
Margaret Ann Popplestone of Morden and winner of the 2nd
prize of $200 was Joyce Phillips of Altona. The $200 prize was a
substitute for the original prize of one night’s stay and 2
half-hour massages at the heartland Inn in Winkler. SCCR thanks all
of the friends of Kerry’s who completed this project at Kerry’s
request and donated it to the organization. A profit of about $2000
was realized from the raffle and much awareness of SCCR was raised
by the raffle.
The Resource Coordinators gave a report on the year’s activity and
the services that were provided to the people living with cancer in
south central Manitoba.. SCCR has provided assistance and/or drivers
for 506 trips to cancer appointments for people from Altona, Carman,
Cartwright, Crystal City, Darlingford, La Riviere Manitou, Mather,
Miami, Morden, Pilot Mound, Roland and Winkler The cost to SCCR, excluding the patient contribution was over $42,000
dollars in this fiscal year which was up from $30,000 in the
previous year. The transportation program is available to persons
who need assistance to be able to attend cancer related
appointments, such as Dr. appointments, chemotherapy or radiation.
The client pays a small fee and SCCR reimburses the driver or family
member for their mileage, parking and a meal if necessary.
23 wigs have been loaned out to clients who have lost
their hair from cancer treatment to new clients in Altona, Carman,
Morden, Gretna, Crystal City, Cartwright, Rosebank, Roland,
Darlingford and Winkler and women in several other communities are
still using the service from the previous year. In addition, many
of these clients and others were able to obtain head coverings which
have been made and donated by various individuals and groups in the
area. A few breast prostheses were loaned out as well.
Expansion continues in the Resource Library as material in video,
CD-ROM and print form is updated and added to the library.
Staff has developed a program called Sun Safety, which is about
protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation to prevent skin
damage and skin cancer. This program was presented in schools in
Manitou, Altona, Winkler and the Pembina Colony and at the Miami
Farm Safety Day and the Carman and Manitou Preschool/Kindergarten
Wellness Days.
Staff, Board members and volunteers have attended functions such
as Health Fairs and Community Expos so that more people are aware of
the services provided by SCCR.
Funding for SCCR continues to be provided by the people in the south
central MB communities in the form of donations, memoriams, grants
and fund-raisers by individuals and groups.
